The old foundation bolts for the engine seemed to be made from brass, and had a certain red glow in some places, which can be the result of dezincification. This is a problem in boats where brasses can loose zink from the alloy - the rest is then porous and weak copper. We chose to change these bolts, but wanted to know which alloy they were made from first.

Bortsett fra kobber og sink, som er vanlig messing, fant de altså spor av Mangan, Bly, Tinn og Jern m.m. Uten at vi helt har klart for oss hva de ulike metallene betyr for legeringa, kan denne minne om det som på folkemunne kalles mangan-bronze. Vanligvis kalles legeringer som hovedsaklig består av kobber og sink for messing. Dersom noen av bestanddelene gir den egenskaper eller farge som ligner bronze kan den kalles bronze.
Except from copper and zinc - which makes regular brass, they also found traces of Mangan, Lead, Tin and iron ++. We are not sure how these different metals affect the characteristics of the alloy, but know that theres an alloy that is called manganeze-bronze. Alloys with copper and zinc as the main ingredients are usually called brasses, but in some cases where the other metals in the alloy gives it colour or properties of bronze, its named just that - bronze.

Før i tiden var det mange små lokale støperier som ble brukt, de gjorde en god jobb, men de visste vel ikke alltid hva de holdt på med. Det viser seg når vi tar analyser av gamle ting, så er det ikke sjeldent at de ikke er verken ”hummer eller kanari”"
In an comment from the company that analyzed the samples, they attach the description of the alloy they have in stock that seems to be the most similar to our samples: "the alloy we have is referred to as manganeze-bronze, which is high-strength-brass, and what we call OM15, but your alloy doesn't quite seem to fit the bill. Back in the old days there were a lot of smallscale local casting going on. They did a good job, but probably didn't always know what they were doing. This comes to show when we analyze old stuff - its not always easy to tell what kind of alloy its supposed to be.
